Sundays Coffee

If you are lucky, your Sunday might consist of an early rise up to get to the farmers market, maybe a jog or a walk down to your local cafe or extra hour of sleeping in, and hoping your bed will love you back like a soft toasted marshmallow. But whatever that may be, if you happen to be down south of Adelaide, with a few hours to spare, maybe check out a coffee cellar door by the guys of Dawn Patrol.

A coffee cellar door you may ask? There have been already a few established around Australia, though deeper research may be needed to find these little gems. I never heard of a coffee cellar door before until my lovely man suggested on hunting one down not too far from where I live. After the Sunday lunch with the family and our bellies full, however well enough to go out adventuring, we headed out and down the country road.

We were pretty lucky on the weather that day. Recently South Australia is in the middle of winter, and has been super cold, but rain is always welcomed and needed down our parts. When we arrived, there were already a few people sipping their coffees and enjoying the sun. At first we had to double check, it was the right place, and we weren’t intruding on a family gathering. It doesn’t seem much from the first look, but the guys who run it and own it are friendly and enthusiastic, and love their coffee.

The coffee cellar door is two connecting little sheds, with a cork wall interior that gives it a warm and inviting atmosphere. The place is small, but big enough to host a good handful of locals and tourist. Its right next door to the owners country house and they have two cute little dogs that will greet you kindly and a sheep not too far behind.

The guys that run the place supply coffee to local cafes within the Adelaide CBD and have a cafe called Sad Cafe. But the coffee cellar door is a great place for them to guide people through the process of making coffee, able to answer any questions on how they source their product, as well as giving visitors a tasting session.

We tried two of their Filtered blend, which is Nicaragua Matagalpa which is beautifully fruity and yet a strong taste, that doesn’t leave much bitterness in the after taste. As well as the Guatemala Antigua blend which is also quite fruity, but also has a nice flowery and fragrant taste, which I think is my favourite out of the two.

After the tasting session and further discussion about coffee and how Adelaide is such a small place, we made our coffee orders and sat in the sun for some rays. As more people slowly made their way in, it was nice to see how the place is flourishing, despite it being in the middle of nowhere.

Our coffees came and were strong and well rounded, and hit the right stop during that afternoon. As the sun began to set, and our coffee became nonexistent, we took in the last of the warm sun and headed on out for a drive while there was still some light.

The Dawn Patrol Coffee Cellar Door is open only on Sundays between 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. It is a drive down, but no matter how you get there, trust me it is a beautiful one.
